The Wanderlust Seven Wonders of the World, as voted by global travellers, are:
Ranking 1 Machu Picchu, Peru 2 Angkor, Cambodia 3 Taj Mahal, India 4 Petra, Jordan 5 Grand Canyon, USA 6 Great Wall of China, China 7 Gal?pagos Islands, Ecuador 14 Mount Everest: Mount Everest (Sagarmatha)- is the World's Highest Mountain. Sagarmatha rises to 8848 Meters (29,030 Feet) above the sea level. Originally Mount Everest was called Peak XV. As it turned out, Peak XV already had two other names one name came from South side of the Mountain, from the Nepalese who referred to it as Sagarmatha or "Goddess of the Sky". The other name came from North side of the mountain from the Tibetans, who had name to it as Joloungma, or "Goddess, Mother of the world". Later the mountain has renamed in honor of Sir George Everest. Although today it is rarely called Joloungma or Sagarmatha, it is clear from their names for the mountain that the Nepalese and Tibetan people worshiped this special place on the earth.
Since the late 19th century, adventurous spirits have been fascinated with the ascent of the highest mountain in the world. Tenzing Sherpa of Nepal and Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand became the first people to stand on the top of the world on may 29, 1953 through south Col via Khumbu Glacier and continued their ascent to the Summit via the Southeast Ridge.
36: All Mountain Ranges of Nepal 43: Kaligandaki Gorge
It is no surprise that Wanderlust readers, Britain's best travellers, chose such extraordinary places for the definitive new list of the 7 Wonders says Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust's co-founder and editor-in-chief.
To explore any of these seven fully requires a great sense of adventure, but they truly represent the most amazing travel experiences on the planet. |
